Privacy Policy
Last updated: 21 May 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the One Move Chess iOS application ("the App"), operated by Tobias Munk ("we", "us"), collects, uses, and protects your information. We aim to collect the minimum data needed to run the game and to be transparent about exactly what we do.
1. What we collect
When you use the App, we collect and store:
- A device install identifier. A randomly generated identifier created by your device when you first open the App. We use this to recognize you across launches without requiring you to create an account. It is not the IDFA, the Apple ID, or any cross-app tracker.
- Your display name. The name you enter when you first open the App. Shown on leaderboards and in your profile.
- Your gameplay history. The chess moves you submit, the time you took, the resulting position, and the engine evaluation we generated to score your move. This is necessary to provide scoring, statistics, and leaderboards.
- Your reputation score. Decremented when the 20-second move timer expires without a submitted move. Used internally to identify abandoned positions.
- Subscription status (if you subscribe). Whether your subscription is active and when it expires. Apple handles billing; we do not see your payment details.
We do not collect: your name (beyond what you choose as a display name), your email address (unless you contact us directly), your real-world location, your contacts, your microphone, your camera, your photos, your IDFA, or analytics fingerprints.
2. How we use it
- To run the gameplay loop — serving positions, scoring moves, advancing games.
- To compute statistics (your rolling average, best-move counts, estimated rating).
- To compute leaderboards (daily, weekly, monthly, all-time).
- To detect and prevent abuse (e.g., abandoned positions, suspected engine assistance).
- To respond to support requests when you contact us.
3. Where it lives
All data is stored in Amazon Web Services, in the Europe (Frankfurt)
region (eu-central-1). We chose this region deliberately
so EU users' data stays in the EU.
4. Who we share it with
We do not sell or share your data with third parties for advertising, profiling, or any other commercial purpose. The only third parties involved in operating the App are:
- Amazon Web Services — hosts our backend infrastructure (database, compute, engine analysis service).
- Apple — distributes the App and processes subscription payments. Apple's own privacy policy governs anything that happens inside the App Store and StoreKit.
We may disclose information if required by law or if necessary to protect the security or integrity of the service.
5. Retention
We keep gameplay history for as long as your account is active so we can compute lifetime statistics. If you ask us to delete your account (see below), we delete your user record, gameplay history, engagements, and subscription metadata within 30 days. Anonymized engine-evaluation caches (which contain no personal data) may be retained indefinitely.
6. Your rights
If you are in the EU/UK, you have rights under GDPR (and equivalent rights under other privacy laws), including:
- To access the data we hold about you.
- To request correction of inaccurate data.
- To request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten").
- To request that we limit how we process your data.
- To object to processing.
- To lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
To exercise any of these rights, email tobias.munk@1movechess.app from the address associated with your account, or include your display name and approximate creation date so we can locate your record.
7. Children
The App is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
8. Security
Data in transit between the App and our backend is encrypted with TLS. Database storage is encrypted at rest. Access to production systems is restricted via AWS IAM Identity Center with multi-factor authentication.
9. Changes
We may update this policy as the App evolves. Material changes will be announced via an in-app notice and reflected in the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the App after a change means you accept the revised policy.
