Terms of Service
Last updated: 21 May 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the One Move Chess iOS application ("the App"), provided by Tobias Munk ("we", "us"). By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
1. The service
The App lets you contribute single chess moves to ongoing, real chess games played by other users (and by our engine when no human player is available). After each move you submit, our backend uses a chess engine to score the move and show you the best continuation. Time controls, scoring rules, leaderboards, and game-completion criteria are described in the App itself.
2. Eligibility & account
You must be at least 13 years old to use the App. By using the App you confirm you meet that requirement. Your account on the App is keyed to an anonymous device identifier and a display name you choose. You are responsible for the display name you choose; it must not be offensive, impersonate another person, or violate Apple's App Store guidelines.
3. Acceptable use
You agree that you will not:
- Use external chess engines, databases, or computer assistance to compute or look up your move during the 20-second move timer. The integrity of the leaderboard depends on all human moves being human-decided.
- Use automation, scripts, modified clients, or any non-Apple-approved means to interact with the App or backend.
- Attempt to discover or exploit security vulnerabilities, scrape data at scale, or disrupt service for other users.
- Use the App to harass, threaten, or display content that is illegal, hateful, sexually explicit, or otherwise inappropriate (including in your display name).
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the App except as expressly allowed by law.
We may suspend or terminate your access to the App without notice if we believe in good faith that you have violated these rules. Engine assistance in particular is detectable statistically over time and will result in removal from leaderboards.
4. Subscriptions & payments
The core gameplay loop — receiving positions, submitting moves, getting engine feedback — is free and remains free forever. Some progress-tracking features (cumulative score, badges, leaderboard rank, estimated rating) are available free for the first 14 days after you create your account and may require a paid subscription thereafter.
Subscriptions are processed by Apple via the App Store. Pricing, renewal terms, and refund policy follow Apple's standard rules; see Apple's Media Services Terms. You can manage or cancel an active subscription at any time in your Apple ID Subscriptions settings.
5. Content & intellectual property
The App, its source code, branding, and original content are copyright Tobias Munk and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You are granted a personal, non-exclusive, revocable license to use the App for its intended purpose.
Chess game records generated through the App may be shown to other users (e.g., in shared game replays). By submitting moves, you grant us the right to display, store, and analyze those moves as part of operating the service.
6. Disclaimers
The App is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee uninterrupted service, error-free operation, the accuracy of engine evaluations, or that the App will be available in any particular country or for any particular period.
7. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages arising from your use of the App. Our total cumulative liability to you for any direct claim relating to the App will not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim (or 0 EUR if you have not paid us anything).
8. Termination
You may stop using the App at any time and may request account deletion as described in our Privacy Policy. We may terminate or suspend your access if you violate these Terms.
9. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Germany, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Disputes will be resolved in the competent courts of Germany, except where mandatory consumer protection law in your country of residence requires otherwise.
10. Changes
We may update these Terms as the App evolves. Material changes will be announced via an in-app notice and reflected in the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the App after a change means you accept the revised Terms.
